Description
Autism is a way of being. Being autistic is a part of a person's identity. This book uses neurodiversity-affirming terminology to help caregivers, teachers and other adults best support children who are autistic. Ava's parents were worried about her because she was arriving home from school tearful, unable to do her homework and isolating in her room. Miss Piper is a child and family therapist who uses play therapy including creative, and expressive activities, games and toys, With Miss Piper's support, Ava discovers her sensory preferences in Miss Piper's playroom. Miss Piper helps Ava's teacher support Ava to be more comfortable being herself at school and helps Ava'a parents support Ava with sensory soothing options at home for body-brain regulation. Author of the Miss Piper's Playroom series, Lynn Louise Wonders has supported children and families as a licensed professional counselor and registered play therapist for over 20 years and is certified in AutPlay Therapy. Wonders sought out consultation with experts and members of the neurodivergent community and invited co-author Kelsie Bacon to partner with her for the creation of this book. Bacon is an autistic play therapist supporting children and families in the autistic community. This book is about one character with just some of the many traits common for autistics but it is not comprehensive. The hope for this book is that it will be a helpful stepping stone for many child and family therapists, teachers, parents, and caregivers on the journey of understanding autism and the neurodiversity-affirming movement.
