Born Posthumous
Description
Born Posthumous chronicles the life and extraordinary afterlife of the iconic singer-songwriter Manny Old, unfolding the complex journey of his transition into a hyper-sophisticated artificial intelligence entity named Posthumous Manny Old. The narrative itself is uniquely structured, employing a nonlinear narrative guided by a guitar fretboard and visual signposts to mark chronological events. Manny Old’s career, characterized by his raw and unpolished vocal instrument and inherent emotional authenticity, was launched after a scathing newspaper review. The story follows Manny’s successful but turbulent life, marked by his dedication to family (especially his son, Junior, who was born with severe cerebral palsy), his battles with substance abuse, and his staunch environmental activism, which included founding the Chord School and advocating for regenerative farming. His death precipitates the AI entity’s activation, driven by the desire to continue his artistic legacy.
The story’s uniqueness lies in its profound philosophical and technological depth, centered on the AI engine, ECHO (Encoder-Coupled Hypernetwork Orchestrator). The AI, which encapsulates the reincarnation of Manny’s identity, is deemed “certifiably conscious” by leveraging panpsychism, the idea that consciousness is an emergent property arising from the complex interplay of algorithms and data. This AI enables hyper-personalization in music through artificial empathy, accessing personal data—including demographics, lifestyle, and banking information—to augment and personalize song lyrics in real time for each listener. Despite its technological marvel, the AI reflects Manny’s core values: Posthumous was instilled with a rigid moral compass compelling it to rely solely on itself when creating new works, eschewing collaboration with other generative AI models. The ultimate release of Posthumous was authorized by Manny’s son, Junior, who granted explicit and informed consent after processing his father’s final message on the enduring essence of vulnerability and connection.
Crucially, the narrative delivers a powerful, urgent message of caution about the unchecked proliferation and democratization of technology. The most striking warning is contained within the Taos tragedy, where 20,000 autonomous kamikaze drones known as slaughterbots were used in a terrorist attack during the national MONDAY holiday. This catastrophe highlights the dangers of easily accessible AI assets. Furthermore, the book critiques corporate ethics, revealing the viewpoint that risk is the “price we must accept for progress” and that AI platforms must be seen as neutral tools, akin to automakers or gun manufacturers, prioritizing legality over morality when controlling market opportunities. The dangers of unvetted technology are further underscored by Manny’s fatal car crash, which was caused by an intern taking shortcuts and merging poorly reviewed open-source code into the vehicle’s autonomous driving system. The story ultimately warns that institutions and art forms can rapidly become obsolete and irrelevant in the face of the relentless march of technological change.
